Welcome!

August 19, 2008

Welcome to the Moss Side Guerrilla Gardening Website, especially if you have recieved a card like in this picture through your door.

Moss Side Guerrilla Gardening needs your help. We aim to be a large group of local Moss Side residents who care enough about their area to do a bit of gardening here and there, now and then, to make their environment better.

To know about our next meet-up you’ll need to join our Google Group where we announce our meet-ups and discuss Guerrilla Gardening in Moss Side. Click here to sign-up.

Have a look at our previous Blog posts and the links on the right to find out more about what we’ve been up to so far!

Looking forward to Gardening with you!

Sunday’s Guerrilla Gardening was the most productive so far! We also had a photographer, Philip, following us for the day who wanted to document the Guerrilla Gardening process from start to finish. When he has processed his pics, we’ll put them up here, so stay tuned!

This week we went to the Hulme Community Garden Centre to buy our flowers. They are great and offer plants at a cheaper price because they are non-profit and care for their community. We hope to build a good partnership with them in the future!

After talking to Catherine at the Hulme Community Garden Centre, we decided to get some larger plants which are self seeding so they will remain next year, and not die over the winter like some of the other flowers we have used so far.

Check out the photo’s of the new plants and watch this space for Philip’s photo’s from the day.

We made a bed a couple of weeks ago and sprinkled some Wild Flower Seed mix onto it and they are just beginning to pop through the surface:

The Path now looks much better:

Extra Pansies

July 9, 2008

With the Pansies left over from last time, we planted them around a tree in Moss Side. I’m sure you agree it looks lots better!

Before:

After:

On Saturday we did some more Guerrilla Gardening at the Lloyd East Garden but sadly the tomato plants and one circle of flowers had been mowed down.

Another circle of flowers had pretty much dissappeared by being trodden down at the top of the steps:

So we got to work putting a few Pansies amongst the flowers that remained:

And we also planted about 60 pansies along the edge of the area next to the road junction:

We had about 15 pansies left over before we left so we’ll let you know where they end up in the next few days!

We need more help to do the planting and bring flowers etc. so please sign up to our Google Group so you can findout when our next meetup and Guerrilla Gardening time will be.

Lloyd East Garden

June 15, 2008

Yesterday was wonderful!

A handful of people met at the bit of grass and trees on the corner of Lloyd Street and Moss Lane East (hence the newly named Lloyd East Garden) to pick up the rubbish and plant some flowers. We had quite a few Marigolds and Bizzy Lizzy’s and some Tomato plants and Sunflowers were brought along too! See the pictures below.

We decided the centre the planting around a cross road of paths people have worn by walking through the patch of land. So we planted 4 circles of flowers in each section. Inside two of the circles we also planted a sunflower.

We had some marigolds left over so planted them along one of the paths and along the other path we planted the Tomato plants and other flowers.

During the afternoon we borrowed a watering can from a Monk who lives next to the Polish church on the opposite corner and got it refilled by a man who lives next to the land. It was great to have other people enjoying our work and helping joyfully.

A neighbour told us that there have been plans to change the land into a Peace Garden – a great idea! But he was concerned that they might chop all the trees down in an effort to start the Peace Garden from scratch. he gave us the number of the chap in the Council to contact, so we will let you know the developments of this here on this blog.

Hello Moss Side!

June 15, 2008

Welcome to our blog!

We are Moss Side Guerrilla Gardeners and we’re going to make Moss Side a nicer place to live and walk around by making it look nicer! Moss Side has a largely negative image, and we don’t agree that it is true. We love Moss Side and want to show that by making it look as beautiful as the people living here.

We’re going to reclaim neglected bits of land and clean them up, plant flowers, bushes, vegetables, trees, whatever will grow and look great!

We aren’t a formal group, simply residents and people who want to plant something here and something there which will make the area more pretty.

We’d love you to join us! To find out where and when we’re going to meet and plant, simply join our Google Group by clicking here.

You can help by coming along to our meetups and bringing plants, seeds or cuttings to plant, gardening tools to share, gloves, plastic bags to collect rubbish, watering cans or simply bring us a thermos of tea!

If you see random plants popping up, please take care of them – this is your Moss Side too!
